Stephen Hillen has established himself as one of the top purchasers of high class thoroughbreds and his success speaks for itself. With horses such as The Grey Gatsby, Brando, Librisa Breeze, Penhill, Astaire and Benbaun and most recently 2016 Melbourne Cup winner Almandin. Stephen consistently provides winners at the very top level.

Having worked within racing for many years, Stephen knows what it takes to source the very best horses and his eye for potential is second to none. Stephen Hillen started his career as pupil assistant to multiple Classic winning trainer Barry Hills at the historic Manton Estate.  Under the watchful eye of Barry, Stephen gained valuable insight into the management and training of racehorses.  After four years there he moved to become assistant trainer to Paul Cole for ten years.  It was during this time that Stephen began to working at the sales with Paul selecting yearlings and 2yos.   

Stephen started up as a bloodstock agent in 2003 and one very successful purchase was a horse named Benbaun who would go on to win 8 Group races including The Prix de l’Abbaye Group 1 at Longchamp.   The Grey Gatsby was purchased by Stephen Hillen Bloodstock as yearling for €24,000 and the admirable grey went on to win the Prix de Jockey Club Group 1 and Irish Champions Stakes Group 1, winning nearly £3 million in prize money in his career.  More recently he purchased Melbourne Cup winner Almandin and many other Stakes winners.    Based near Lambourn Stephen has quickly established himself as one of the leading independent bloodstock agents in Europe.  His success can be seen throughout both Flat and National Hunt Racing.

Following many years working in the racing industry, Stephen Hillen has built up a reputation as being one of the best in the business and his ability to spot potential in young horses is second to none. Stephens’s vast knowledge of the sport assures that Stephen Hillen Bloodstock will give you the best advice and guidance surrounding every aspect of the thoroughbred bloodstock industry. Stephen is in attendance at all of the major sales in Europe and North America, where he can advise clients on their purchases for both racing and breeding.

 

Foal Purchase
Stephen is happy to give guidance on foal purchases for both racing and pinhooking investment.

Yearling Purchase
Stephen’s yearling purchases have proven to be very successful, buying both privately and at public auction, with many proving black type on the racecourse.

Breeze Ups
Breeze up sales have always been a strong focus of Stephen Hillen Bloodstock with previous purchases including multiple Group 1 winners The Grey Gatsby, Astaire and Brando.

Horses-In-Training
Stephen has strong form and pedigree knowledge leading to notable success buying horses-in-training both privately and at public auction, including Group 1winners Librisa Breeze, Melbourne Cup Winner Almandin and Shraaoh who went on to win the Sydney Cup.

Breeding Stock
Stephen will assess conformation and pedigree on all possible mare purchases and help to obtain sire nominations and advise on mating plans.

Stephen has also been involved with a number of successful EIS Schemes (Enterprise Investment Scheme).

Racehorse Management
Stephen’s connections with trainers’ across Europe and strong race form knowledge allows him to build an extensive race programme for all your horses. Stephen has successfully managed racehorses for clients in the past, including Qatar Racing and Dr Marwan Koukash, helping the latter achieve his goal of 100 winners in one year.

Valuations
Stephen is happy to assess and value any racehorse, breeding stock and young stock.

Administration Assistance
Becky Hillen has extensive knowledge in this area having worked previously as racing secretary for trainers Paul Cole and Mick Channon. She is happy to assist all new owners with any administration queries, including new owner registration and VAT procedures.
